ASCEND 2013 – Fearless Joy
Welcome to the first year of the ASCEND Women’s Conference! This year, FEARLESS JOY will bring together remarkable women all across Los Angeles to educate, inspire, and ignite them to lift Jesus higher in their careers and personal lives. We thank Pastor David and Linda McKechnie, and the Bel Air Presbyterian Church Staff for supporting us and making this event happen. Incredible speakers including Nancy Alcorn and Jennifer Rothschild, along with a panel of remarkable women, join forces in giving the message that we can fearlessly face our challenges in life, and find God’s Joy!
Founder, Jennifer Rothschild Ministries. At the age of fifteen, Jennifer was diagnosed with a rare, degenerative eye disease that would eventually steal her sight. Jennifer has been a featured speaker for the nations’s largest conference for women, Women of Faith, teaming up with Beth Moore and others. Author of almost a dozen books including best-selling Lessons I Learned in the Dark and Self Talk, Soul Talk. Her story has been on the cover of numerous national publications including Today’s Christian Women, Virtue, Becoming Family, and Homelife, as well as her own online magazine, womensministry.net
Nancy Alcorn, Founder and President of Mercy Ministries, began her ministry devoted to young women in 1983. God ha called Nancy to help hurting young women find freedom and have their lives transformed. During her eight years working for the state of Tennessee at a correctional facility for juvenile delinquency, Nancy developed a passion to impact the lives of women across the country and around the world. Under her leadership, Mercy Ministries has seen exponential growth and impact establishing locations in Louisiana, Tennessee, Missouri, and California, and has even grown beyond the borders of the United States with homes in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Canada. Mercy Ministries focuses on young women seeking freedom from physical and sexual abuse, including sex-trafficking, eating disorders, self-harm, drug and alcohol addiction, depression, and unplanned pregnancy. Nancy is committed to helping young women recognize their self-worth and reach their full potential.
Deborah Pegues is the E.C.P.A. award-winning, best-selling author of 30 Days to Taming Your Tongue, as well as 14 the transformational books including Emergency Prayers and Confronting Without Offending. She is an international speaker and Certified Behavioral Consultant specializing in understanding personality temperaments. She has appeared on numerous television and talk radio shows throughout the USA and abroad. Top magazines such as Newsweek, Charisma, Essence, and others, have featured her sage advice. As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with an MBA in Finance, Deborah’s clients have concluded several high profile personalities. She is a former VP of MCA/Universal Studios venue capital division and currently serves on the Board of Directors for World Vision USA.
Main Stage Speakers
Brenda Epperson-Moore is no stranger to television. As an actress, she is known by audiences internationally for her portrayal of Ashley Abbott on the CBS daytime drama The Young and The Restless for eight years. You may have seen her in her Spring 2015 appearance on the CBN 700 club where she shared her testimony and upcoming book series. As an accomplished singer/song writer, and a signed Sony Tri/Star musical artist, she toured with Lionel Richie as his opening art.
She recently released her new single I Cry Freedom. She works regularly as a TV on air host, a woman’s speaker, and is a contributing author to the book, Blessedness of Brokenness, on how God looks at our brokenness and sees beauty. Brenda currently blogs for MICI (Made in Christ’s Image).
Kathleen Cooke is an actress, businesswoman, writer, speaker, and founding partner (with husband, Phil Cooke) at Cooke Pictures and The Influence Lab in Burbank, CA. She edit the monthly Influence Women Newsletter, and her weekly blog, as well as is a column regular for WHOA Magazine. On the boards for Hollywood Connect, Hollywood Prayer Network, and the National Salvation Army, she travels regularly nationally and internationally speaking on faith, media, leadership, and culture. Kathleen also kicks off and facilitates our ASCEND women panelist discussions.
Lucy Noland joined NBC4 LA in July 2011. She anchored the weekday noon an d6pm news shows as well as investigating and presenting insightful special reports. Born in Saigon, Vietnam, Noland began her career in broadcasting at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Prior to joining NBC4, Noland worked at the CBS affiliate KHOU-TV in Houston, Texas, where she was the co-anchor of the station’s 5pm and 10pm weekday newscasts.
Growing up in the fifties in a small suburb of Santa Barbara, CA, Mary Hudson never dreamed she’d be a preacher. Studying in private schools, and graduating from the University of California at Berkley, she encountered the Lord on a train ride between Washington D.C. and NYC, and it radically changed her life. Mary and her husband Keith, have been in ministry and married for 33 years.
Kim Dorr-Tilley is the co-owner and founder of Defining Artists Agency. She has worked in entertainment, specifically with on-camera talent for over 25 years. She developed and ran the Casting Department of the Arther Company, an independent television production company. Kim jumped across the desk in 1993, becoming a talent agent at BBA where she headed up the Children’s and Young Adult TV/Film Division and started the Adult Theatrical Department. In 2002, Defining Artists and Adult Theatrical Boutique Agency was born. In 2005, Kim took over ownership of Defining Artists with her partner, Dede Binder.
Ordained in 2005, Kim serves as the Entertainment Pastor at Bel Air Church. Her main focus in ministry there is to the entertainment industry with a fellowship group known as, The Beacon.
Meagan Good was born in Los Angeles, CA and began her career at the tender age of 4. She is an American film and television actress and occasional film producer. Meagan has appeared in numerous commercials, television shows, feature films, and music videos. From 1999 to 2003, she appeared as Nina on Nickelodeon’s hit show Cousin Skeeter. Although Meagan was not raised in the church, she considers herself a believer of Jesus, and has in numerous interviews stated that she will not do roles that she feels might “disappoint God,” and in one interview said that Jesus tops her hero list and the last book she read was the Bible.
Lindy Boone-Michaelis was born into an entertainment environment as the second daughter of singer/entertainer, Pat Boone. She grew up in Beverly Hills, CA, and for seven years, the Boone Family toured all over the U.S. and internationally. The Boone Girls recorded several Christian albums including, First Class, which was nominated for a Grammy award. Wife, mother, and author, Lindy penned the book Heaven Hears after her son, Ryan, had a tragic 3-story fall in 2001. She tells of her family’s faith and the faithfulness of the Father to see them through their ordeal. Ryan’s Reach foundation was started to support families of brain injury survivors in 2003 out of gratitude for Ryan’s survival and continued recovery.
Musical Guest Performers
For more than 13 years, Sylvia Lange and Billye Sluyter-Johnstone of Crimson Bridge have led worship for women’s events and major conference across the country. Together they share a passion to lead women into the presence of God with grace and honesty. The ASCEND conference is making our worship experience a priority, and Sylvia and Billye will change the way you look at the power of music.
Christi Ebenhock was destined for a singing career and began singing for Maranatha Music at an early age. Through her teen years, she toured with many different artists around the toward. While attending Azusa Pacific University, where she majored in Vocal Performance, Christi Toured with Warner Brothers with recording artist Tia Carerra. She had recorded for Word, Sparrow, and Frontline Music with numerous Christian artists such as Crystal Lewis, Rick Florian, Al Denson, Kim Boyse, and John Schlitt, releasing her first Christian radio single with Rick Florian. She also recorded and assisted in the production of all the children’s voices for Andy Williams’ Grammy nominated We Need A Little Christmas.
Kelsey Cooke was born into the entrainment industry. She acquired her first agent at the age of six and after earning a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts in Los Angeles, she lived and worked in New York City for five years working on various off-broadway shows, national tours. She had co-starring roles on the television shows Pan Am (ABC) and Royal Pains (USA Network). Her success brought her back to LA to continue her career and she has been featured on numerous television shows, films, and commercials along with creating her own original productions.
